What is Raspberry Pi OS?

Raspberry Pi OS is the Debian-based operating system maintained by the Raspberry Pi Foundation for Raspberry Pi hardware. This image is built directly from the official raspios_lite .img releases — no re-packaging, no third-party rootfs — with only the packages that cannot function inside a container (kernel, initramfs, bootloader) removed, plus a small set of desktop/multimedia/wireless-firmware packages that are dead weight in a headless container.

Every tag is a multi-platform manifest list covering both linux/arm/v6 and linux/arm64docker pull/docker run automatically selects the right one for the host, and both can also be selected explicitly with --platform.

Version tag policy

Docker image tags follow the release date published by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, e.g. 2026-06-19 — the same timestamp that appears in the raspios_lite_{armhf,arm64}-YYYY-MM-DD download URL. The dateless tags (latest, lite, trixie, trixie-lite) always point at the most recently built release date; the dated tags (YYYY-MM-DD*) are kept around for reference and never overwritten.

How to use this image

Run a shell
docker run --rm -it starxen/raspios bash
Pick a specific architecture
docker run --rm -it --platform linux/arm64 starxen/raspios bash
docker run --rm -it --platform linux/arm/v6 -e QEMU_CPU=arm1176 starxen/raspios bash

QEMU_CPU=arm1176 forces genuine ARMv6 (Pi 1/Zero) emulation instead of QEMU's default ARMv7 model when running the arm32/v6 variant under emulation on non-ARM hosts.

Use as a base image

RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends your-package && rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*

apt-get install/apt-get upgrade work normally inside the container — the packages that would otherwise break under emulation (kernel, initramfs-tools, bootloader) are already removed from the image.

Environment Variables

The image provides the following environment variables:

  • IMAGE_ARCH: Image architecture, either ARM32V6 or ARM64.
  • RASPIOS_RELEASE_DATE: Upstream Raspberry Pi OS release date this image was built from.
  • RASPIOS_CODENAME: Debian codename of the underlying release, e.g. TRIXIE.
License

Raspberry Pi OS is released by the Raspberry Pi Foundation under its own licensing terms. This project only automates downloading, extracting and trimming the official images — no modification of package contents.
